Visiting the 6th smallest country!

We’ve now been to 3 of the smallest 6 countries in the world 🙂 Lichtenstein was visited during our Switzerland road trip.

This trip took place May 2024.

During our time in Lichtenstein (only a few hours), we actually got to see quite a bit! We entered the country through Austria, near the town of Fresch, Austria. The border crossing was another small hut with no one in it. The drive into Lichtenstein was essentially driving through a neighborhood where we saw lots of homes and local children playing outside, all along a gorgeous view of the valley.

Our first stop was at some old ruins – there was hardly any info at the site or on online, so honestly I’m not even really sure what it was. It was free to get in, and we were the only ones there. You could make out some old rooms and fireplaces. The name of the place was: Obere Burg.

Next, we made our way to the bird sanctuary – Vogelparadies Birka. To get there, we drove down this really questionable road. It wasn’t well marked but our GPS kept us going this way. It was essentially a one way dirt road with lots of trees nearly hitting the car. Here is the road sign 🙂

This was another free activity and the kids loved it. It has a nice little parking lot, a small restaurant/snack bar, and paths to walk around and see the birds. The birds were super loud, and some were really funny – interacting with the kids, following them around as they moved. It also had another great playground where we relaxed for a while because it looked like a storm may be rolling in.

Finally, we made our way into Vaduz, the capital. There is a great castle that you can view from a distance on the top of the mountain. The downtown itself was nice and clean and pretty, but very crowded. There really is just one main road running through the entirety of the country. You can drive across the WHOLE COUNTRY in less than 30 minutes!

We had planned to do a bit more walking around the town, but we spent a lot of time at the Wildpark in Austria and the bird sanctuary, and wanted to get back into Switzerland to enjoy our tiny home. The traffic also was a bit off-putting. We ended up parking in a paid garage and walking up to the Lichtenstein Center area. It had a nice area to walk around.

We then visited a gift shop because we heard that they will stamp passports – I had read this numerous times during my research This was a huge mistake! First – they charged us money, something like $3-5 a stamp! We didn’t realize that until they had already done 2 of our passports, so we just went ahead with the other. Second, and most importantly – I learned after the fact that it could have caused us issues when we go to enter or leave another country. Hasn’t been a problem yet, but anyway – take our mistake and learn from it 🙂
