Maine

Maine is one of those states I keep dreaming about going back to. We were lucky enough to spend a couple of days exploring a few beautiful towns, but it barely scratched the surface of everything there is to see here.

This trip was taken July 2021.

In Maine, we visited 3 main places: Kennebunkport, Mount Agamenticus and Ogunquit.

Kennebunkport

Our first stop was the charming coastal town of Kennebunkport.

We spent an afternoon here checking off a few classic Maine experiences. First stop: a lobster roll from The Clam Shack. There was a long line, which honestly tells you everything you need to know. We grabbed our food and sat at picnic tables right by the water — an easy, perfect way to start the trip.

From there, we stopped at HB Provisions to pick up one of Maine’s most iconic treats — whoopie pies (or, in our case, probably a few more than one).

We took them over to Walker’s Point, where you can look out toward the coastline and see the Bush family estate in the distance. More than anything though, it’s just a beautiful, rocky stretch of coast with incredible ocean views and spots to sit and take it all in.

Kennebunkport is one of those towns that feels effortlessly charming — small, coastal, and easy to wander.

Mount Agamenticus

Mount Agamenticus was an unplanned stop for us, but ended up being a great one.

It was a beautiful day, and we wanted to stay outside a bit longer, so we drove up to the summit. You can take a road all the way to the top, where you’re rewarded with wide, sweeping views of the surrounding area.

There isn’t a ton to do once you’re up there — but that’s kind of the point. It’s more about the view, the fresh air, and the quiet break from driving than anything else.

Ogunquit (lodging: Ogunquit River Inn)

We absolutely loved Ogunquit.

We stayed at the Ogunquit River Inn, which ended up being a highlight on its own. The property has a huge backyard overlooking marshland, and depending on the tide, the water moves dramatically through the landscape — it almost feels like the scenery changes throughout the day.

From there, it was an easy drive into town for dinner at RAMP Bar & Grill, which made for a simple and relaxed evening.

One of the best things we did here was walk part of the Marginal Way — a coastal path that stretches for about 3 miles along the ocean. The views are stunning the entire way, with waves crashing against the rocks and plenty of spots to stop and just take it in.

We also spent a full beach day here, which ended up being one of our favorite memories from the trip. The beach itself is wide and beautiful, but what makes it unique is how the tide completely transforms it. At high tide, part of the beach fills in and almost looks like a river, and then as it goes out, kids were literally riding inner tubes along the water as it flowed back toward the ocean.

It’s one of those places where you could easily spend an entire day and not get bored.
