Driving a golf cart around the beautiful island of Bonaire!
Bonaire was a one-day stop on our 12-night ABC islands cruise — 8am to 1pm, five hours total. Not long, but we made the most of it, and I’m pretty confident we had the best morning of anyone on that island.
As always, we skipped the cruise ship excursions. Too expensive, too crowded, too boring. Instead we rented golf carts through Bonaire Cruisers, and it was the perfect call.
This trip took place December 2022.

They didn’t have a four-person cart available, so we rented two two-seaters. We walked straight off the ship to a tent where they pointed us to the shop — easy to find, zero hassle.

We’d reserved in advance, so we were on the carts and moving within minutes. The island is flat, traffic is light, and the whole thing felt relaxed from the start.

We did the southern loop. Bonaire Cruisers gives you a map and a full rundown of where to go, but we’d done our research ahead of time so we skipped the tutorial and headed out.
The route was simple and packed with good stops. We pulled over at the salt flats, the slave huts, the lighthouse, and had multiple flamingo sightings along the way — and when I say flamingos, I mean thousands of them. Not a handful. Thousands.

We made a few more stops at some scenic beach overlooks, swung by to watch the kiteboarding (wish we’d had more time — it looked incredible), and finished with the donkey sanctuary, which was a genuinely fun stop. Driving your golf cart through while donkeys wander around you is exactly as great as it sounds.

We had to hustle back to the ship, but we fit all of that into about 3.5 to 4 hours. Bonaire was a short stop, but renting the golf cart made it feel like a full day. Highly recommend doing it this way if you’re passing through on a cruise.
