Costa Rica

Sloths in Costa Rica!!

Our first—and so far only—visit to Costa Rica was during a cruise stop. It hardly feels fair to judge such a beautiful country based on just a few hours, but we were grateful for the chance to get a small glimpse of what Costa Rica has to offer.

This trip was taken December 2022.

Want to see where else we stopped at? Check out: Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Puerto Limon Costa Rica, Panama Canal, Cartagena and Santa Marta Colombia.

In a move that was very unlike us, we booked a cruise excursion. We mainly did it because we had onboard credits to use. We usually avoid organized tours since they’re often expensive and involve spending much of the day on a large tour bus—which was pretty much the case here.

That said, we did get to see and learn some interesting things along the way. Our cruise docked in Puerto Limón, where we boarded a bus that took us to a historic banana transport railway. We rode the train through lush scenery filled with banana plants, wildlife, and small villages. One of our favorite parts was seeing the homes along the tracks and learning about the communities that have developed there over the years. Our guide explained that much of the land technically isn’t privately owned, so people began building homes there without formal authorization, and many remain today.

Next, we boarded a river cruise, which ended up being the highlight of the day. We spotted plenty of wildlife, including sloths, crocodiles, and monkeys swinging through the trees. It was also a welcome change from the train, allowing us to enjoy the scenery from the water. Photos don’t fully capture the experience, so be sure to check out our vlog to see the animals in action.

After the river cruise, we returned to the port and spent some time browsing a local market for souvenirs before heading back to the ship.

While our visit was brief, it left us wanting to return and explore much more of Costa Rica someday.
